This is one of the more dominant quadraphonic receivers ever made – the Sansui QRX-9001. It’s definitely comparable to the Marantz 4400. It put out 60 watts per channel in to 4 channels and 120 watts per channel in to 2 channels. It features CD-4, QS and SQ decoding all on board so all you have to do is flip a switch to hear the different decodings.
This was the big boy of the quad series. Sansui made a number of other quad receivers as well including:
The name Sansui means Mountain and Water. The company itself started in Tokyo in the late 40’s and made transformers. They later moved into audio with amplifiers and stereos.
The build quality of the early solid state Sansui units was fantastic which is one of the reasons they are so sought after today.
The Sansui QRX-9001 is especially sought after today and a favorite among quad collectors. One recently sold (7-28-2011) for $490.00 that was in very good cosmetic condition but had one weak channel of 2 channel mode. Another QRX-9001 sold for $1220.00 on 7-28-2011 that had been completely restored. However 2 channel mode had been bypassed so it only worked in quad mode. Still, it was a beautiful unit.
Update 4-2017: Unrestored but really nice fully functioning unit sold for $1000.
Update: 9-2019: A really nice QRX-9001 with original box sold for $1500.
Update 2 May-2020: Fully serviced QRX-9001 sold for $2400.
