Sansui QRX-5500

Sansui QRX-5500

This Sansui QRX-550 is one of Sansui’s Quadrophonic offerings. It puts out 30 per channel to four channels into 8ohms.  It is part of the early beginnings of surround sound. I believe Sansui had six QRX quad offerings and the QRX-5500 was the middle of the spectrum receiver. It was produced in the early 70’s. There was also a QRX-5500A version that reflected a change in the syntax of the decoding from QS to QA and SQ. It has that classic early Sansui styling that was also found on the 9090DB.

Sansui QRX-5500

The QRX-5500 had a number of decoding options such as:

– QS Synthesizer

Surround +  Hall

– QS Regular Matrix

Surround +  Hall

– Phase Matrix

– Discrete

– 2-Channel

The Sansui quad receivers are all fairly popular.  They are difficult to find in full working condition but, when they are, they sell for reasonable prices.

  1. I would like to know if your Sansui QRX-5500 is for sale? I don’t find it on Ebay listings? Please put me in touch with a way to purchase one? Thanks, Larry

    1. Hi, that unit was not mine but ended up selling for around $250.00. Maybe if someone browsing here has one for sale they’ll post the info.

    2. Hey Larry, yes the Sansui QRX 5500 shown above is for sale on my EBay site. My seller name is “ buzzybeeboy”. Also I have a Sansui SD5050 reel to reel tape deck listed. Feel free to check them out.

    3. I have a beautiful Sansui QRX 5500 I purchased while in the USAF in the early 70s. It is original and works like it did the day I took it out of the box. Used very few hours over all these years.
Email me at daxeyes@aol.com if you are still interested in purchasing.
      Thank you.

    4. I have a Sansui QRX 5500 Receiver that I’m contemplating on selling. Purchased it new and to this day, it still looks and operates new. Only problem is the packaging and mailing of this unit. I’m hesitant in doing that as it is scratch free and weighs 24.8 kg (54.8 lbs.) My intent is to show it to someone and have them listen to it as well as see how pristine it is and was also hoping they lived somewhat nearby from where I live, enabling them to package it up and bring it home via their vehicle as opposed to sending it via UPS, Purolator, etc. One of the main reasons why I haven’t listed it on either EBay or Kijiji. I can be contacted at this Email: millaireg@hotmail.com and please tell me that you live nearby. lol Cheers, George Millaire

    1. Hello Debbie,
Do you still have the QRX 5500? I recently was given one and would like to ask you a few questions on the operation. Are you using yours in Surround sound mode? When I have a 2 channel source, ie turntable, and I select the synthesized Surround sound mode.. I only get sound out of 3 of the 4 speakers… Is that normal? On a discrete 4 channel mode all 4 speakers work.
Any information regarding this would be awesome.

  7. I bought my 5500 in 2012 off ebay for 250. Set it up in my garage pinball hangout with four sp-5000 speakers. RUSH hemispheres sounds ungodly wonderful at 1 am. I consider this QRX a great all around stereo, no need for the pricier models. Who needs anything louder, never had to turn it up past 6 ish, for overwhelming volume.

  8. I have a QRX-5500 for sale.

  10. Unfortunately I have no choice but to sell my Sansui QRX 5500 4 Channel Receiver which I had purchased new. To look at it, one would say it’s NEW. It’s in mint working condition and has been recently cleaned and calibrated. I moved from a 3000 sq. ft. home to a 1700 ft. bungalow (down sized) and there is no place to set it up and get the full use of it via my Bose 501 and 601 speakers. I also have the original Operating Instructions large manual (still sealed in original plastic sleeve, along with the Large front and rear panel heavy duty laminated parts and photos card and the 4 page specification sheet describing every part in detail, etc. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase another receiver like this one but as one downsizes, it’s a matter of space to set up.
